Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontics is a specialized branch when it comes to dentistry and requires certain qualifications to perform. We understand that your appearance is the first thing that gets noticed and fixing any part of it is a matter of great responsibility. Orthodontics means the care and correction of any misalignment or improper spacing between teeth. These are achieved by the use of braces. The teeth to be corrected are wound by the braces and over time, the shapes get their natural orientation.

Orthodontic Braces Types

Orthodontic braces come in quite a few types and choosing your best fit is essential.

traditional metal braces
Traditional Metal Braces

These are probably the most common orthodontic braces one can see around. Very noticeable but sturdy, these braces have been used and tested successful. With the advent of modern bracket braces and heat activated arch wires, these have become smaller and are less visible than before, but work even better. These are the least expensive types of braces one can get.

Ceramic Braces
Ceramic Braces

Same structure, feel and usage as the traditional braces, but these are tooth colored, making them unnoticeable at a glance. Ceramic braces also provide the added advantage of less resisting jaw mobility.

Lingual Braces
Lingual Braces

Similar to Metal and Ceramic braces, the difference is that these are placed on the inside of the teeth rather than the outside making them completely invisible. They are quite expensive and are often difficult to clean.

Invisalign

These are custom made for every patient and are like clean transparent covering for the teeth. You can wear them with ease and there are no food-restrictions while using these.

Procedure

  • While getting the braces for the first time, one is always curious of what is to come in the way. Putting on braces is not at all scary as it may seem and often requires as little as 1-2 hours. The whole process begins with the cleaning of the teeth (mouth washing and teeth rinses), then it is dried. After a few minutes of drying, a super special glue is put on the teeth, which will remind you of cans of old adhesives but there is no need to worry because these are perfectly safe. Brackets are then placed and arch wires are put on them. The final step is securing the entire formation and you are good to go. Simple! On an average it will only take around 2 hours.

Age Groups

  • Braces can best work when your teeth are still in a condition to grow and change according to the way the dentist wants it to, but in most cases effects can be seen at any age, though it takes time. The ideal age for getting the braces would still be around 11-16. At these ages, it becomes imperative for parents to talk to their children and making them realize the importance, because of any mishandling of the braces while attached can harm the entire teeth structure, making it more or less permanent, unless you shell out a fortune to get it right.

Orthodontic Braces FAQs

No not at all, the process is often painless and there is nothing to worry about. It merely include washing and rinsing, drying and applying the archwires.

Actually no, braces have no easy alternative and no other way will work effectively. Braces are the best way to cure orthodontic issues.

As said above, braces can be put on at any time, but the ideal age ranges from 11-16 when the proper alignment of teeth while growing is possible.

Yes you should as it is during this time that proper steps can be taken for growth of permanent teeth. Delaying the treatment can make the process get longer and cumbersome.

Not necessarily, when permanent teeth come up they often are crooked and are perfectly natural, get to your dentist and let him decide if the case is severe or not.
